Sonia Kallick loved Lemont. She devoted much of her life to learning and recording all she could about the history of the village and unselfishly sharing that invaluable knowledge with anyone and everyone who wanted to learn. This book distills two decades of her research into a work that was intended as a gift to the community, a demonstration of how much she cared for the rolling green hills, the church steeples, the limestone facades of downtown, and the wonderful citizens and characters that make Lemont so unique.

The book was based on the hundreds of columns she wrote about Lemont and relates the town's history from the time of its geological formation by glaciers to its occupation by the Potawatomi, and through recorded history from the early exploration of Father Jacques Marquette in 1673 through Lemont's birth and adolescence until 1910. It is a comprehensive and vital history that relates one Midwestern town's political, economic, social, and cultural history. In Sonia's own words, "It's about ordinary people and why they did what they did. It's about the social and economic influences that make today and shape tomorrow."

Sonia was taken from us before she could see her history of the Lemont set down in a bound volume for all time, but she was able to complete the material for the book. That she succeeded in her quest to document this everyday phenomenon, the making of history, is best demonstrated in the pages she wrote.
