Lejla's Story

What do you do when you are a young girl and your country is at war, your father is off fighting in the mountains, neighbors have stopped trusting each other, many of your friends have been killed or moved away, and you are living with your mother and your sister in a dangerous, war-torn city?In 1992, that is the situation Lejla is in. When Civil war breaks out, she tries to carry on as usual, studying hard because she has a dream that one day she will go to America, and she wants to be ready. And then, when the war is in its fourth year and only getting worse, she is offered a chance to go to the United States. Some American families have agreed to take in Bosnian students for the duration of the war, and Lejla has been selected because she is a good student and because she speaks English well enough to fit in when she arrives. But first she must contrive somehow to obtain all the travel documents she will need and get herself hundred of miles to Zagreb in Croatia, from which the flight to America will depart. She must travel though her own war torn country to get to a neighboring country which may not be welcoming to a 16 year old Bosnian girl. The plane is leaving in seven days, with her or without her.
