Born on July 6, 1785 in Cottbus, on December 2, 1810, he became assistant preacher at the Trinity Church in Berlin, in 1815 preacher at the large Frederick's Orphanage, in 1816 teacher and 1825 professor of history at the Royal Cadet House, in 1827 deacon, 1832 archdeacon at St. Nicholas and the Monastery Church, 1836 consistorial assessor and 1843 consistorial councilor. In 1841 he was awarded a doctorate in theology by the theological faculty of the University of Berlin. From 1827 onwards he was a member of the board of trustees of the Schindler's Orphanage in Berlin, where he lived and was thus able to directly supervise and promote education and teaching. His extensive knowledge, his rich and mature pedagogical experience, and his fatherly love based on Christian love made him a particularly suitable leader and educator of youth. He died on December 31, 1857. Of his numerous writings, we mention only the "Handbook of German Prose," Volume 1, Berlin 1818; his "Synchronistic World History," 1820-24; his "Guide to the History of German Literature," 1830, which went through seven editions in 13 years (15th edition, 1887); his "Guide to General History," in two editions; and finally, the "Monuments of the German Language," in six parts, from the earliest times to the present (1851). Berlin 1838-51.
