Legend of the Devil

Legend of the Devil is a story about the coming of age of a boy born into the post Civil War period in Missouri. Orphaned at the age of twelve, the boy is sent to live with his uncle on a small farm near Oreana, Nevada. The story follows young William Oddie from his simple life on the Nevada farm to the life changing decisions which form the man he is to become. His decision as a boy to learn how to draw and shoot an old pistol that once belonged to his father leads William to develop a marketable skill. At a very early age William develops the skills of a gunfighter. His thirst for knowledge leads him to read everything he can get his hands on. From newspapers to Scientific Monthly, to art history and to the occasional story about himself. William has the good fortune to partner with a man who serves as the father figure his uncle Caleb couldn't be. Tom Ezell leads William by example and not by lecture or coercion. He provides a firm and fair example that will allow William to grow both professionally and ethically until he can no longer justify hiring out to protect the property of unethical people.Transforming themselves from enforcer gunfighters into lawful bounty hunters eventually makes them rich beyond what they could have ever imagined. Large bounties designed by Wells Fargo to encourage the capture of train and stage coach robbers pile up in the bank faster than William and Tom can spend the money. In the end, William knows the life of a gunfighter is destined to be a short one. There would always be a faster gun. Someone would come for him. In order to survive, he would transform himself one more time.
