This historical fiction novel begins with colorful descriptions of the beautiful state of Virginia and then tells the true story of the legendary Confederate Colonel, John Mosby, who led a band of cavalrymen in northern Virginia during the Civil War. The dashing Mosby and his daring raiders struck fast and with great success to the frustration of the Union generals, and then always seemed to be able to disappear just as quickly, and that ability led him to acquire the nickname of the "Gray Ghost."When Robert E. Lee finally made the decision to surrender, which would end the war, a select team of Mosby's raiders were given the responsibility of bringing the articles of surrender to Appomattox Court House on that fateful day in 1865.The story then morphs into the fictional tale of how one of those Mosby raiders went on, after the war was over, to found a family whose descendants would become very wealthy and influential over the following years. Later, in 1908 they would establish a very respected private university in the beautiful horse country of northern Virginia which wuld be named in honor of the old Gray Ghost, John Mosby.Most of the story centers on the fall of 1958 when the school would be celebrating it's 50th anniversary. It features the various groups of students and their many adventures, as well as the story of the school's first black student, Willie Hairston, who is trying to get his degree after leaving college a year early and going onto a successful pro football career. Willie, who becomes the book's central character, volunteers to take on the task of trying to save the school's falling football program which was on the verge of being terminated and try to return the team to respectability and preserve the legacy of the Gray Ghost.
