The story is about a ten-year-old African American boy who lives with his mother. His father is deceased and he wants desperately to buy his mother a diamond necklace for Christmas. He began savings the pennies he found when he walked to and from school, and any other time he walked outside. Lefty meets Lucille, a new Caucasian friend from school. He adds her and a neighbor to his Christmas gift list. The moral of the story is how Lefty extended kindness and compassion to others, regardless of his own circumstances.
