Lefty Stein is eighty-nine years old and he has lived a wildly colorful life. He had sold his country estate and had taken a luxury suite in an upscale retirement facility where he is held in awe by the other residents. He is famous, wealthy, loved and feared. He is a night owl and he works though the night on a fictional biography that mirrors the events of his life. Tonya Jefferson, the night attendant, comes into Lefty's life when he comes to her aid as she is being abused by a demanding, spoiled "yenta." Tonya dreams of becoming a writer and Lefty becomes her mentor and the benefactor of her family, struggling to escape the poverty of the ghetto. Tonya becomes like a daughter to Lefty as they work through the night together on his novel. Lefty's high school sweetheart, Hildie, a WWII refugee from Vienna, reappears after an absence of sixty-two years. They relive the struggles she endured as a fifteen year old in a strange land and her sadness when Lefty abandoned her after returning from Iwo Jima as a heavy drinking, womanizer. Life meanders is strange ways, and it found a way for Lefty Stein and Hildie Klein to fall in love again in their final years.
