Leaving the Middle Lane

Someone wants Maeve Carey dead. But why? She leads a mundane life with her husband Jeremy in a large home in prestigious East Lake Forest, Illinois. However, Maeve is restless. She and Jeremy have grown apart and Maeve cares for her elderly parents without help from her brother and sister. When Maeve spots an ad for an assistant in a small law firm in Lake Forest, she applies and is hired on the spot. On her first day of work, Maeve's car veers out of control and she is injured. Luckily, an anonymous caller reports the accident. After a few weeks, Maeve starts working at the law firm. But the job is not what it seems. The owner of the law firm acts erratically and Maeve suspects that his stepson may be involved with drugs. One night, someone enters her house and tries to kill her. The police have no clues or suspects and Maeve has no idea who wants her dead. Is the killer a random stranger or someone else, someone close to her? Maeve reexamines and changes her priorities in life and her interactions with others. In the process, she discovers who tried to kill her and that divine guidance has been helping her all along.
