Memories from the past, hope for the future

Reminding us of an interesting past, Henry also shows us a way to make the future a better "place" for all of us to live. This comes from words of wisdom about life. Worth reading by anyone who is interested in either past or future.

HENRY sWAIN HAS REACHED ONE OF HIS GOALS

Mr. Swain spoke of wanting to become a philosopher. As far as I can tell he surely has become one. I so enjoyed his book and had too many favorite essays or stories to choose a favorite. I hope many, many people will be intelligent enough to buy his book.

Spirit Lifter

We have in our midst a combination Kin Hubbard, Will Rogers, and Andy Rooney. I have just finished reading LEAVES FOR THE RAKING by Hank Swain of Brown County, Indiana. It is a gem of a book about some real characters and some not so real, but very likely. His combination of humor and philosophy with unexpected punchlines makes this one of those books you don't want to put down, but neither do you want it to end. I'm anxiously awaiting his next book.

A BROWSER'S DELIGHT !

Don't try to categorize "LEAVES FOR THE RAKING" by Henry Swain. It is many-faceted: rural life in the 30's, the building of character from Quaker roots, post-WWII homesteading in southern Indiana, wise epigrams, tongue-in-cheek tales of wily Hoosiers, and the challenges & delights of residing in a small community of artists, craftsmen and retired folk -- some 'native' -- some 'imported.' My favorite stories are 'Thanksgiving 1935,' 'Truck Policy' and 'The Scuprats of Salt Creek.'Chapter headings are enhanced with handsome scratchboard drawings by another young-at-heart resident, Harlan Scheffler. The author's granddaughter, Tess Kean, designed the very attractive covers which bind the whole and picture the author philosophizing as he takes a break from raking his Brown County lawn. There is a wryness in Swain's prose which is reminiscent of Robert Frost. The author's philosophy is close to that of Henry David Thoreau who is remembered for living in the woods. The book contains memoirs, 'entertainments' and even the poetry of 'Haying.' It is published by *1st Books Library* of Bloomington IN. The publisher also offers this title in electronic format.Your SECOND COPY will rest handsomely & provocatively on the bedside table of your guest room while you enjoy rereading parts from your own book. And enjoy -- you will !!
