Learning to Rescue

Who Will Be Saved? A poet takes in a homeless person and struggles with the juxtaposition of reality, art, and thoughts about rescuing the contradictory woman. Warmth, care, a stable home, and a kitchen to have free creative reign in may not be enough. Four kinds of people live in my small, Northwest port town: the Rescuers, the Protectors, the Helpers, and all the Others. Others are regular people everywhere in every town. Helpers are such wonderful people who have ever accomplished tiny or humongous acts of kindness and civility. Protectors equal anyone who has ever opened important pieces of their hearts to help us live, survive. I have come to believe that a true Rescuer isn't merely a Lassie(TM) saint or the guy at the other end of the rope. Pain and empathy and risk and constant practice are needed.
