A maligned gem.

I never expected a book of 272 pages to compete with the thick and serious books I could (and) have bought to teach myself German. Maybe that's why I rate it so much higher than other readers seem to.Rather than getting too in-depth, the author does a good job of filling the pages alotted to her with what feels like an overview of what is involved in learning German. Providing just the right amount of grammatical examples to illustrate what she's talking about.This book isn't a college course. It's more like the context and details that a good teacher might give you to prepare YOU to go and do the work of learning. Or like the conversations you might have with fellow students after class, about the experience of trying to get a grasp on German as a foreign language.I'm using it as a supplement to Living Language's CD set "All-Audio German: Basic-Intermediate" (0609603973) and having great results.
