You can't lead from the sidelines. Leaders are those who step on the field and play the game. Leaders aren't made. They just are. Leadership emerges from natural ability and experience. And although the game may change, the fundamentals of leadership do not. This book discusses some of those fundamentals that apply regardless of the field of play. It reflects on the character of leaders and how that character emerges and develops. It also examines success and failure, and the roles of teamwork, discipline, communication, flexibility, and humor in promoting a culture of loyalty and trust. Leadership on the Field of Play contains advice, caveats, and general observations taken from 40 years of stepping onto the field every day with my teams and taking my swings. It shares some of what my teams and I learned from our successes and failures and how we used our experience to refine our game as we changed the face of higher education in America.
