This book is about the testimony of a tortured woman who was emotionally and physically abused by her family and husband all under the belief that female suffering is necessary in order to become 'une bonne musulmane'. Being a woman born into a Muslim family is not welcomed and as a result the lives of many can be described as abuse in several forms. The author was brave enough to tell her story via this book and hopefully many more women will tell theirs so that someday in the near future basic human rights will be respected. There's a fine line between religious and cultural beliefs vs. human rights and IMO, the line was crossed several times. The limit for me was when her father kicked her in the head in one of her many beatings, she and her daughters were obliged to live in a storage room in her parents home and one meal had to be shared among the three of them. Once she liberated herself from her abusive husband, a new struggle began when she moved to France with five children, no money and no immediate employment. It just seemed liked there was no end to Samia's battle. However, willpower, faith, strength, determination and her kids are what allowed her to begin a new life abroad in Canada and feel a sense of hope for life. A tremendous story of a woman who wanted to be free.
