Compared to the illustrated, voluminous Larousse, this holds it's ground quite well. It's easy to use, nice print, not too big, sturdy paperback (meaning it won't turn to mush or assorted pages if it gets knocked around your book bag for a couple of semesters) and it's versatile enough to be used by beginners but complete enough to be used by experts. Case in point: I only took two semesters of French, so I'm still at a beginner's level, but I've been able to use this without any difficulties; but my best friend has taken French for over 7 years now, and she found it incredibly useful, and started asking me to carry it around whenever she was doing any research for her thesis at home or at the coffee shop, just so she wouldn't have to take the aforementioned Larousse (which, although is quite possibly the best French dictionary I've seen, is so incredibly heavy and thick it's like hanging around with an Encyclopaedia volume) All in all, for the price listed, this is a GREAT pocket dictionary.

Incroyable!

I am a beginner-intermediate francophone and serious francophile and plan on living in France for about 6 months. I have several French-English dictionaries including the excellent Harper Collins Robert (7th Edition). These have certainly been useful in my progress with the language. I was somewhat hesitant about getting a dictionary written entirely in french. After using this book for a short time, my vocabulary as well as my grammar and knowledge of syntax and everyday usage of the language has increased dramatically. The Robert Micro is far more than a typical dictionary. The definitions are for the most part surprisingly comprehensible, even for someone of my level. If my understanding of the word is still fuzzy after reading the definition, there are frequently many phrases using the word that are enormously helpful in further sharpening my understanding. Then, throw in several synonyms and antonyms and all of the sudden you are approaching real understanding of what the word means and how it is used in french! If that were not enough, there are frequently references to other word entries of similar shades of meaning to further enhance understanding. I will be using this reference as much as possible and will only use my French-English dictionaries when the meaning of a word is still not clear. This occurs less and less frequently and I anticipate that before too long, it will be rarely necessary. If you are serious about improving your French, whether a novice or expert of the language, I cannot encourage you strongly enough to purchase and begin using this fantastic book as soon as possible.

Essential for any serious French student

This was the dictionary required by my Intermediate French II class. The definitions are all in French, which can be daunting at first but ultimately helps you learn to think in French. I still use an English-French dictionary for translation from English to French, and there are times when you really just need to get the English equivalent of a French word quickly: knowing that "if" in French is "yew" in English is much more useful than "arbre a fruits rouges, decoratifs". The definitions are expansive, the pronunciation is noted in IPA for each word, and you often end up learning synonyms and other related vocabulary.

Superlatif

My French didn't really take off until I started using a French-French dictionary for my reading, and this is the one I used.I cannot recommend it highly enough, but my enthusiam stems only in part from the high quality of this book in particular. Rather, in learning a language, having to decipher the definitions instead of having them handed to you makes a puzzle out of every word you don't know. So, after staring at the definition, when you finally realize what the word means, you're unlikely to forget its definition, since you figured it out yourself. I guess what I'm saying is that I found that when you yourself solve a riddle, there's a greater chance that you'll remember it. This is certainly not the case even with the best French-English dictionaries.This is a compact dictionary, yet impressively complete. Also, it's designed for learners of French (though not necessarily English-speakers), so the definitions, while completely in French, are crafted to be clear and user-friendly.The binding is excellent and the whole thing has a sturdy feel to it.Perhaps the thing I found the most useful was that for every definition, the word is used in an easy, readily-apprehended French sentence, making it supremely easy to guess the meaning in the event that the definition proper was nebulous.I have two gripes:1. Bizarre particles found in your reading (like "eu," for example) aren't listed in this book, the way most French-English dictionaries refer you back to the root verb. So if you find something that you know is some odd conjugation of an irregular verb, this dictionary won't help you.2. There is, alas, a printer's error with the '99 edition: Starting on page 359, the entire Introduction is reprinted upside down. Unlikely this would ruin your fun, though.
