Le bras blanc [French]

By Lisa Azuelos

-What is a phantom limb? I asked Etienne, lifting my polished toes to catch the light.
-Who told you about that?
-About what?
-The phantom limb. Not many people have heard the expression.
-I read about it in a newspaper. I don't like to lie but sometimes it gains a lot of everything.
It's an amputated limb that you can still feel. An arm or a leg. It's your unconscious mind still trying to figure out what is missing. Bizarre, huh?
Yeah, bizarre.
A small drop of rain on the windshield that doesn't stand a chance against the big fat windshield wiper. Just like me with Ivan.

You can leave one man for another but know that you will always love the first one. You realise that the presence of one does not fill the absence of the other. That the road to the core of absence is not a one-way trip is hard to accept.
