This book came recommended to me by a good friend and, after savoring it little by little, it is clear why. Farhoud writes a very thoughtful commentary on time, aging, family, and the joys and hardships of leaving one's country and adopting a new one--to the extent that such a clear adoption is possible. But happiness does have a very slippery tail, and Farhoud's work evades and surpasses such easy lists of topics. It is about life and life's complexity; it is simple without being simplistic. A moral work in as much as the heroine asserts and lives by age-old precepts, Le Bonheur and Douma deftly avoid pedantry by questioning the very precepts she professes. This novel has something for everyone.
