A mournful princess sits at her castle window. Meanwhile, Jack (probably the laziest person in the world) is sent out to work by his mother. On his first day he is paid a shiny coin, but he drops it... This description may be from another edition of this product.
Tony Ross's charming re-telling of this traditonal folk story is one of my youngest son's favourite books, it never fails to make him laugh. Jack is so lazy he just sits around the house doing nothing, and his mother tells him he'd better go and get a job or else. The first day Jack is paid a shiny pound, but he drops it on the way home. "Twit!" his mother shouts "You should have put it in your pocket" Next day, Jack goes to work for a cowkeeper and is paid with a jug of milk. Remembering his mother's instructions, he pours the milk into his pocket. "Silly sausage head!" shouts his mother "You should have carried it on your head!" and so it goes on, with Jack getting it wrong every time, and his mother getting ruder and ruder in her comments. Meanwhile the King and Queen ar ehoping that someone will come along who can make their sad daughter smile.... Tony Ross's delightful illustrations complement his cheerful re-telling of this funny folk tale, it should appeal to any child who likes to laugh.
A CLASSIC

This was my favorite story as a child (possibly because, like Lazy Jack, I never got anything right either). The story creates silly images and a sense of premonition that children love.
