There are many miracles recorded in the Gospels, but the raising of Lazarus stands apart. It is not simply the account of a man brought back from the dead - it is a revelation of the Father's glory in His Son, a living picture of what Jesus came to do for every soul. When Jesus stood before the tomb in Bethany, He did not act alone or apart from the Father. Lifting His eyes toward heaven, He prayed, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me" (John 11:41-42). In this prayer, Christ revealed the mystery of His mission: all that He did and said was to make the Father known (John 5:19; John 14:9-10). Every miracle was not merely a display of power, but a sign of the Father's will and the Father's heart, accomplished through the Son by the Spirit (Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38). Lazarus' journey from the silence of the tomb to the light of day was therefore not only a testimony to the power of Jesus, but a manifestation of the Father's life-giving love - the same love that sent the Son into the world "that the world might be saved through Him" (John 3:17). In calling Lazarus by name, Christ was doing the works of the Father (John 5:21), revealing Him as "the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist" (Romans 4:17). Lazarus' story is not just his own - it is ours. We, too, have known the cold grip of spiritual death (Ephesians 2:1). We, too, have heard the Father's call through the voice of the Son, summoning us to "come forth" into newness of life (Romans 6:4). And we, too, are called to live unbound, free in the light of His presence, so that "men may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). From beginning to end, the raising of Lazarus is a story about the glory of the Father revealed in His Son - a glory that breaks the chains of death, wipes away tears, and speaks life into the lifeless (Isaiah 25:8; 2 Corinthians 4:6). My prayer is that as you read these pages, you will not only learn about Lazarus but will behold the Father's glory in the face of Jesus Christ (John 1:14; 2 Corinthians 4:6) and hear for yourself the voice of the One who still calls you by name.
