Differentiation for the Secondary Teacher

As secondary teachers we often hear that we should differentiate our instruction. In the secondary classroom this is usually accomplished by giving the high achievers more work; and, reducing some of the work for the low achievers. Sadly this is not really differentiation. Recognizing this many secondary teachers turn to many sources of information about differentiated instruction. Unfortunately many of the books written about differentiation are targeted towards the elementary teacher. Translating these practices to the secondary classroom is a bit of a chore and often does not result in the desired outcome. Nunley's layered curriculum was designed in a secondary classroom. As a secondary teacher I can say that it really does work. Nunley's approach allows a teacher to: 1) provide opportunities for student choice of assignment by preferred learning style. 2) provide opportunities for student choice of assignment by intereste. 3) provide assignments for different levels of readiness. 4) guide students through assignments that cover all levels of Bloom's taxonomy 5) Give students options in how they can demonstrate their learning (e.g. authentic assessment). If you are a secondary teacher and you want to learn to differentiate instruction; I strongly recommend this book. Nunley's layered curriculum is a straightforward approach to differentiating instruction in the secondary classroom. In addition to this book you will also want to read How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms or Differentiated Instructional Strategies: One Size Doesn't Fit All. Either of these books will give you a solid understanding of why a teacher should differentiate. Nunley's book will provide you with a straightforward approach to implementing differentiated instruction in your classroom.

Excellent, Research-based Teaching Ideas

I had the privilege of attending a seminar by Dr. Nunley today, and the book mirrors much of the content - I highly recommend both. This book takes the vague concept of "differentiated instruction" and makes it concrete, using Dr. Nunley's own "Layered Curriculum" model. The book includes anecdotal information, brain-research information and many excellent examples, including how Layered Curriculum can be applied to different age groups and content areas.
