Kwame and his friend Seydou are playing with space toys at bedtime. Holding a toy rocket, Kwame wishes aloud that it could take him to the moon and back - and Seydou warns him to be careful what he wishes for. That night a storm blows the windows open, and Kwame wakes to find a real rocket outside, piloted by an alien who looks like one of his toys. He climbs aboard in his pyjamas and is taken on a tour of the solar system: past the eight planets, down onto icy Pluto, and on to Mars, which the alien calls home. When the rocket malfunctions and crash-lands on the moon, Kwame floats and bounces across the surface - thrilled, terrified, and wishing Seydou were there. Once the alien repairs the ship, Kwame asks to go home rather than continue. He's returned to his window before dawn and slips back into bed unnoticed.

The next morning his mother dismisses the story as a dream, though Kwame does talk her into painting his room like outer space.
