Laura Wingate, was a girl whose mother died when she was twelve and then was raised by by a father who mistreated her. She dreamed of leaving home, and shortly after she graduated from high school, she did exactly that. She packed a suitcase and caught a bus to the city with all the money she had saved from odd jobs and babysitting.

Five years later, she found herself graduating college and then she applied to the police department but was rejected due to a back injury that was caused by her father pushing her down the steps and blaming her mother's death on her.

She ended up getting a job at a private investigator's office and eventually took the state test for a license and passed, becoming a real private investigator. Shortly thereafter, she was called to return home to settle her father's estate.

Going back home, she was confronted by the local mob, claiming she had to pay what her father owed them. Reuniting with her childhood friend, who was now a detective on the local police force, the story entails their battles with not only the local mob, but with Mexican cartels, and even a Chinese cartel.
