Here are Latin writings by Europeans who experienced the discovery and development of the New World area which would be known as New Spain. It includes Acosta's discussion of the lands and early peoples, Cabrera's epic poem of King Quetzalcoatl, Landivar's epic poem about founding cities in Lake Texcoco, Columbus' impressions, Cortes' description of Tenochtitlan, and the dialogues of Cervantes de Salazar discussing Mexico City, built by Cortes among the remnants of Tenochtitlan. "Latin in the Western World" traces the Europeans' gradually unfolding understanding of the New World and the development of the ViceRoyalty of New Spain, which included present-day Mexico and Central America, much of the western United States, and Florida, as well as the Spanish East and West Indies. The book begins with Acosta's discussion of the lands and early peoples and how they differ from European conceptions. It moves through Cabrera's epic poem of the city of Tollan and King Quetzalcoatl, Landivar's epic of the founding of the cities in Lake Texcoco, and proceeds through Columbus' letter giving impressions of the lands he has found, Cortes' description of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital, and ends with teaching dialogues composed by Cervantes de Salazar, who in 1554 discusses Mexico City, which has recently been built by Cortes among the remnants of Tenochtitlan. All the Latin selections are from the writings of Europeans who actually experienced the Spanish exploration and colonization of Mexico except those from Cabrera, who is a modern-day Mexican specializing in the history of his native land. The Acosta, Columbus, and Cortes writings are in prose. Cabrera and Landivar write in epic poetry, Cervantes de Salazar in dialogue. Approximately 110 pages (w illustrations) glossary, bibliography, historical notes and questions to enrich comprehension
