"Late Night Drink with the Devil".: The Devils side of the story

By Eric Obloy

Everyone knows his name. No one has ever heard his side.

Elias Vane was the best investigative reporter in the country - once. Now he's broke, divorced, and one drink past closing time in a dead bar at the edge of nowhere. Then a stranger in the back booth says his name, and offers him the only story left in the world bigger than the man he used to be.

The stranger says he is the Devil. And he wants to give his testimony at last - the whole of it, from the first day of creation to this one - to a witness honest enough to write it straight.

What follows is one impossible night. Across six thousand years of humanity's worst - the witch fires, the slave ships, the gas chambers, the glowing screens - the accused makes a single, devastating case: that he was never in any of it. That every horror was done by human hands, freely, and then laid at his feet so the world could sleep. That we built a Devil so we would never have to look in the mirror.

But the Father of Lies only ever tells the truth. And the closer Vane comes to believing him, the closer he comes to the one story he has spent twenty years refusing to tell - his own.

Is it the truth? Or the most beautiful lie ever told? Before the sun comes up, Vane will have to decide what to do with it.

So will you.

"The worst things you have ever done, you did by yourselves. And then you gave them to me to hold."

A hypnotic, devastating novel about blame, free will, and the face we cannot bear to see in the glass - for readers of The Master and Margarita, Paradise Lost, and Interview with the Vampire.

Every historical event, named victim, and scripture in this novel is real and was checked against the record. The interpretation is the Devil's. The choice of what to believe is yours.

Pour a drink. Pull up a chair. He's been waiting a long time to talk.
