Cole Mackonis is a storyteller. He has been following invaders to his country trying to document what they have been doing. One day as he is sitting on a hill describing the destruction of a village on the other side of the valley, when he is surprised by a stranger asking what he is doing. The man is secretive about his name, but tells him "Storyteller, follow me to Breko Ham and perhaps beyond and I will tell you stories to fill your head for many years." And so Cole follows. Em Penkas is a villager who has been captured and enslaved by the invaders. She has been forced to follow these greymen for almost a full year, suffering their beatings and verbal abuse. But along the way she has learned their language and their ways and knows that when the time is right, she will be able to rid herself of them. And the time comes sooner than she has expected, for a number of the invaders have been killed south of where her captors are encamped by some unknown enemy. When the three people finally meet, they begin to unravel the mysteries of a legend that has been told for centuries around the campfires of their land. Together, they must find a way to stop the invaders and destroy the land bridge that has allowed the greymen to invade their once peaceful land.
