Suzanne Love Harris, an ordained Episcopal priest, gives us a story of the redemptive nature of love and of the power of the universe to heal all things. Lili is a young girl swept into an obsessive love affair with an enigmatic Italian physician doing research at the Rockefeller Institute in New York City. Their cultural differences are nothing compared to his bouts of depression, and Lili's life is flung from the hights of rapture to the depths of despair. Antonio returns her love, but that isn't enough to counteract his depression. Eventually disaster strikes, and Lili must continue in a new and ultimately rewarding life. Lili learns that "love" isn't a synonym for "lasting." This is an intelligent, thoughtful, literary romance, one destined for a great readership.
Choosing Love in the Mystery of Life

LASTING is the perfect novel to read this time of year when daylight is shorter and you're feeling cozy. It has a genuine quality, as if a close friend were telling you the story of her life. I escaped into Lili's world and fell in love with her. Lili, the narrator, is seventeen, ripe for life when the novel begins. Suznne Harris shows us a window into Lili's soul where we watch life shaping her as she matures. No matter how painful an experience is, Lili chooses love. She is a woman of heart and curiosity. The men she meets and marries each encourage her to develop parts of herself. But without her own courage and determination, she would not have flowered. This novel connected me with a range of feelings: my aliveness, my anger, my vibrant sexuality, my sadness, sensuality and longing for romance. It reminded me of how so many of us must struggle to find our own identities separate from our parents and later mates, and all the feelings that sweep through us as we go through this process.LASTING has a quiet, economical style. You can sense a psychological underpinning that makes the story realistic rather than a fantasy, but you are not overpowered by it. In a few words Suzanne Harris creates a vivid image or clarifies a psychological dilemma that Lili faces, coming from her particular family with its own version of suffering. This is an honest book about life with its suffering and joy. You can tell that the author has a deep understanding of the mystery of where life takes us and what it is like to be human.
