This western saw life as an ACE mass market paperback in 1963. By that time Ray Hogan had been issuing novels since 1956 and this novel shows how he had mastered his profession. Cole Rinnegar has received a letter from his fiddle footed brother, Harvey, stating that Cole needs to come to Cabresto quickly but does not state the reason. Cole is to contact a "Miz Hope Holliday" to locate missing brother Harvey, well Harvey isn't missing really and he has not long to live either, having been shot in the back by four outlaws. Once Cole locates Hope Holliday and his brother all things are explained but serious consequences ensue, leaving Cole now the possible future target of these same shooters who plugged Harvey, plus Hope's chances of living to old age aren't probable either, especially once the backshooters find out she has been hiding Harvey Rinnegar. Plots within a plot all build in this exciting western, one written in the inimitable style only Ray Hogan to execute. Looking for a few hours great reading?
