Memories....

I just love this book, mostly because I lived it. I lived and worked in Iran at exactly the same time as the author, and knew many of the people in this book....names are a bit different from the real ones, but I was able to definitely identify some of them and knew exactly who she was talking about. I experienced so many similar things, similar cast of characters....this book just brought it all back so vividly. This was a great and wonderful time, crazy, exciting, and I wouldn't change a minute of it. For anyone who has lived in Iran, you'll appreciate the humor and details. Some of the stuff might sound made up, but believe me, these things happened, oh yes they did, wackiness on a daily basis....I'll just say that Iran was a unique and special place. If you have never been there, this book serves up a delicious look into expat life in Iran during this period of time and shows a side of Iran you might not have envisioned. Too bad this book is difficult to obtain...but a few copies are floating around. I had my own copy which I bought soon after publication, but I recently got a second one to give to my daughter, who was only 7 when we went to Iran. She thought it was a real hoot!

Brought it all back

I was in Iran before and during the Revolution. I remember so well the blackouts, the strikes, the creeping zaniness of people you thought you knew well. This book brings it all back. Wonderful book.

The Iranian Revolution with flair!

I loved this book. Wonderful humor. I literally laughed out loud at many, many points in the book. It was really interesting to see Robin Sterling's love and compassion for the individual people she met in Iran as well as her details of the compassion individual Iranians had for the Americans in Iran at the time of the revolution. AS the other reviewer did, I felt as if I were reliving those days but with a lot more insight into Iran, her people, and why the center did not hold. I'd love to see more by Robin or Martie Sterling and I'd love to see this book reprinted given recent events. Wonder what R. Sterling's up to these days?

Tears and Laughter in the 1979 Iranian Revolution

Robin Sterling's vivid diary of the last days of the fall of the Shah held me from the first page until the last when she was boarding the bus to be evacuated. I felt I was following those intense events again, this time from inside Iran, not just from the media view. Her love for the people she met before the craziness took over is evident throughout. This should be reprinted --everyone needs a glimpse of the Islamic world that exists below the media hype that passes today for information.
