Texas Ranger William McKiever is returning to headquarters to turn in his badge to begin a new life as a cattle rancher. The captain of the detachment is going to offer him one last assignment, but the captain is worried, knowing a killer lurks-a gunman who suddenly appears, kills, then disappears. Adding to the captain's concerns is his knowledge that McKiever will take the assignment because of a woman-a woman McKiever had fallen in love with, but who had married his best friend and former partner.
