Larry Poons: Six Decades

Throughout his long career, Larry Poons (b. 1937) has always commanded attention for the ambition of his painting. After shooting to fame in the 1960s with his geometric Dot paintings, he defied expectations by constantly evolving his technique, progressing through canvases based on poured or flung paint, to bas relief-like collaged surfaces, to an intimate mode of painting directly on the canvas with brushes--and his hands.

This attractive oversize book, the catalogue of a major retrospective exhibition, features full-page plates of more than fifty important works from throughout the artist's career--including some he has just completed, nearly seventy years into his career as a painter. Essays by several noted art critics and historians illuminate each phase of Poons's artistic journey, offering fresh perspectives on classic themes in his oeuvre alongside never-before-published archival materials.
