My review is from the point of view of a person who is taking a third university-level course in French. It is true that one can learn conjugation of French verbs by memory, and that is a good way to do it. However, if you are like I am, you may find that you need a crutch. I like the Larousse Conjugaison Poche because it is small, and though it is not complete like "501 French Verbs", it provides all a student needs. The book is well indexed, and although it does not conjugate *all* French verbs, it conjugates enough and, through the index, it refers the user to either the direct conjugation or to a conjugation of a similar verb. This strategy of presenting conjugation is probably better for the student than actually giving him or her complete conjugations of a large number of verbs. That is to say, it helps the student to recognize the verbs and the patterns of conjugation, thus reinforcing the learning of the conjugation. It is difficult to learn a foreign language like French, and I feel that the Larousse Conjugaison Poche is the kind of "crutch" that I need. I like the way it approaches conjugation, and I like the way it encourages me to learn the patterns of conjugation that I will need as a university student studying French.
