When Lark fails her first robbery for Luchoo's gang, she catalyzes the transformation of her city, Urno, for the worst. It propels her and her best friend, Felix, into a desperate escape from Urno. Lark must find a place where she can safely learn her Skill, metalworking, or risk disappearing like the rest of her family. Meanwhile, the city's ruler, Mr. Ronnie Kettle, the 6th Kindly Patron of Urno, engages in a political tug-of-war about all Special citizens with powers. The fate of Lark and Mr. Kettle are intertwined with the future of Urno and the Specials. As Mr. Kettle's powers are questioned, more and more Specials disappear under mysterious circumstances and there seems to be no one able to set it right. Until Lark hears the news and it sets of a chain of events even the authorities will have trouble containing.
