Two men have been sent into the ancient past by Temporal Security to covertly investigate the presence of the militant Tarein as they attempt to acquire alien scrolls that have been hidden within the vast collection in the Library of Alexandria in 48 BC, but the two men have failed to report in.

In the twenty sixth century, Larissa, a young vampire whose past is shrouded in mystery, finds out about the mission during her own clandestine research. She takes it upon herself to go into ancient history to find out what happened to them, even at the risk of compromising her own covert mission, and against the advice of her older vampire friend, the one person who knows the full truth about her. But what the scrolls lead to is something that the Tarein should never get their hands on; the lost technology of the Vihl, an extinct race with highly developed mental abilities whose last starship crashed on Earth thousands of years ago.
