As a homeschooler, I really like the approach of Learning Language Arts Through Literature, produced by Common Sense Press, but it is not a secular resource and, while it offers a lot of activities based on the literature, it is also a little heavy in the handwriting practice for the younger ages.
I'm so glad I spied this and gave it a try. Even though it is written to be a classroom guide, it can definitely be adapted to use in home education. It has units that feature one story (usually an award-winning story) with several suggestions for additional and related readings. The projects are relevant and age-appropriate and engaging. The only thing I don't really need is the classroom script, but otherwise, it's great.
Since this program doesn't feature any explicit handwriting practice, aside from the practice children get through doing the activities, you might need additional worksheets to supplement emerging or struggling writers.
This level seems to be a good fit for the second grade reader with some independent reading and writing skills.
