Language revitalization: Case of Amazigh in Morocco

This study investigates the policies and the attempts made to revitalize Amazigh through its implementation. The study took place at three primary schools in Southern Morocco in Chichaoua. It scrutinizes the attitudes of primary school students, instructors, and parents towards the contribution of expanding the teaching of Amazigh in Moroccan high schools and universities to overcome its demise. A total of 106 students, 10 teachers, and 5 parents made a rejoinder through survey and interview questionnaires about Amazigh revitalization and implementation. On a one hand, the students, firmly believing that Amazigh is of no use, are not oblivious of the threat that is facing their mother tongue. On the other hand, the teachers strongly oppose the concept of teaching via Tifinagh for its difficulty and sophistication. Replies palpably indicate that the interest in Amazigh is lessened among students, teachers, and parents; surprisingly, the majority of whom are Amazigh natives.
