Land Shared and Safe Places: Little Lamb Rhymes

By Samuel DenHartog

The fighting has finally quieted, and for the first time the people can think about where they will live instead of where they will march next. Leaders gather with maps and memories, ready to share hills, valleys, and streams so that every tribe has a place to call home. Children watch as lines are drawn and names are spoken, learning that this new land is not taken by grabbing, but received as a gift that is meant to be shared.

In the middle of these plans, some special stories unfold. An old but eager Caleb steps forward to ask for the rugged hill country he was promised when he was young, still trusting that God will help him climb and build there. The daughters of Zelophehad stand before the leaders to claim the land Moses said should be theirs, and their fields appear on the map like a soft answer to a long held need. Towns of refuge are chosen where people can run after terrible accidents and be heard fairly, and the Levites are given scattered homes so that teachers and helpers will live among every tribe.

Not everything goes smoothly at first. When the tribes who live across the river build a huge altar by the water, rumors race ahead of understanding and some are afraid their brothers have walked away from God. Instead of rushing into a fight, the leaders go and talk, listen, and learn that the altar is really a giant reminder that both sides of the river belong to one family with one God. This story invites families to imagine tents turning into houses, promises finally kept, safe places marked on the map, and a whole people learning how to live together in peace.
