Elvin, an alien from Energon, an energy planet, is restless. This is not a characteristic of his people; they tend to be stoic, almost emotionless. However, he is slowly becoming human, exiled from his home planet. He runs a small exotic fruit and vegetable stand on the corner of NE Crystal Street and NE 7th Avenue in Crystal River, Florida. The plants he grew from seeds he got from The Field, a food-producing planet serving a wide variety of customers in the Milky Way. Because of his exile, he can no longer go to The Field or to Energon. Earlier, he and Harald and Augie, his human friends, went out into the Milky Way in an Energonian spacecraft with Fil, a farmer on the food planet. It was a trip he much enjoyed. Restless, he persuades his friends to make another trip. Where to go was the big question. After a trial run in Earth's solar system in his modified spacecraft, a large Red Bus, accompanied by a sassy AI running the bus, they head out to take a look at other solar systems, looking for planets with the potential for life. After many failed efforts, they come across a small rocky planet seen through a swirling gray haze left by clouds of gritty, choking dust from violent windstorms of long, hot, sulfurous days. Beyond a wall of rugged black-brown basalt lava flows is Foofletown, a little village in a deep green valley. There, they meet Gleej, an eight-year-old Foofle boy and his faithful plarki.
