Land disputes and their impact on agricultural production

Our in-depth analysis focused on land disputes and their impact on agricultural production in rural areas: the case of the Nyiragongo territory. Its aim is to improve agricultural production in order to combat food insecurity in the Nyiragongo territory. Thus, the objective can be summarised in three points: to identify the factors influencing land conflicts in the Nyiragongo territory, to pinpoint the resulting consequences, and, finally, to propose a possible solution to improve the situation. This study concluded that the causes of land conflicts are a shortage of land (63.64 per cent) and the destruction of crops by livestock. This, in fact, explains the conflicts between farmers and herders: everything revolves around the shortage of land, which, as a key resource, is coveted by all. At this stage, an agrarian policy is required from the Congolese state. Such a policy could help establish priorities between agriculture and livestock farming (the lifeblood of the community's economy).
