You can feel the French Riviera

"I still can't realize what has happened to me. I, Jacques Bernier, go on vacation in the Midi July first and fall madly in love three days later, after a good twenty years of emotional serenity." - Jacques Bernier (BLIND LOVE) I am a great fan of Patrick Cauvin's books, though I have only read a few of them. The rest are in French and have not, as far as I can tell, been translated into English. BLIND LOVE was the first I read and perhaps the best. There is humor and a natural feel about this book that I enjoyed from first page to last. Cauvin writes about two ordinary people, Laura and Jacques, though one is blind and the other sighted. They meet in a movie theater (Why would a blind person be in a movie theater, you ask?), travel from the south of France to Paris, and behave like two ordinary people in love. All's not smooth, however, and there are obstacles, but...(mercifully) no car chases, no drug deals, no foul language. Just a refreshingly adult read. Perfect for a rainy day with a glass of red wine and a comfortable chair.

Summer delight, realistic love story, living with blindness.

...It starts off with a male teacher, middleaged probably, starting off his vacation by going on a spontanous car journey. There is some Gauloise-smoking in a good laidback mood, shopping for a suit at a petrol station ... Very good-humoured written - I mean great humour! What a treat - a book to simply lay back and enjoy. It starts just about this time of season. A very humorous description of the school finale also, first chapter, and the personas, throughout the book. Not only with humour, and warmth, (but) also very insightful and vivid described. A love story with a blind woman is so lovely, it is among the most wonderful I have read. Also there is controversy around his dealing with her blindness. I remember a scene where she stands, eyes shut, at the ocean, head up to the sky, rain falling on her face, mixed with her tears ... A lot of taking spontaneous drinks at bars ... Easy feeling + deep too ... Portrait of the culture shock of his daughter's hippie friends ... A simply wonderful summer reading - I will read it for the 3rd time this summer. And I will read some more of his books.
