I am not Cajun but I've known some. I'm not Hatian...but more than one has called me 'frere'. I am from New England, but I've always loved New Orleans, blues, Jazz and voo-doo. Please don't tell anyone, but during a working life of over 40 years, I always had at least one or two voo-doo dolls going. One would be for a boss, a second battered litle figure would be for a rival. Now I'm not saying that all this voo-doo worked. But. I'm still here. Some of them "ain't". Anyway, if you've ever loved a Louis Armstrong song, or a tune from Smiley Lewis, Dave Bartholomew, Fats Domino etc. Or if you've ever had a hankerin' to stick pins in little dolls...then this book is for you. A review should never give details...just a feel. It's like that ol' saw that they give to new salesmen..."don't sell the steak. Just the sizzle." So here's the sizzle. New England. New Orleans. Lady Winslow-daughter of a Cajun aristocrat and a New Orleans Washerwoman. Old Voo-Doo lady named Pantanouche. A piano player named 'Brick the Tickler'. the old caste system....do you remember how people were classified in the old days? Octaroons, Quadroons, etc. Race plays a big part in this intense tale that builds like the bass line of an old Stomp tune by a harlem jazz band. 5 stars of 5 william russo 18 nov 2007
Jazz, mystery thriller in gone with Katrina New Orleans of a bygone era
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 18 years ago
This book was published in 1985 and has gone out of print, which is a grievous shame because it is a wonderful novel. The focus is turn of the century creole New Orleans as the jewel in a crown whose plot is overgrown by a twisted thicket of thorny componets: jazz, psycho marauding shadowy figures and creeping closeted family secrets, betrayal and more. If you add murder into the thick dark roux of the book, you are served forth with delicious denouement gumbo of great reading. Highly recommended but not as an airplane novel, which is the main reason I picked it up in an airport conveniece shop. The novel is spellbinding, although sometimes difficult to follow but worth the effort.
