I've become a Joan Smith fan. This author really researched the Regency period, and she has used political events of the time to power the plot of Lady Madeline's romance. Lady Madeline, the single daughter of a prominent Tory, takes a young man (or two) under her wing each season, teaching him how to dress and who to cultivate to further his career. This year her protege is her own cousin. He's less cooperative than some other young men she has assisted, but she finds herself falling in love with him. Then unexpected political events turn her romance upside down. Happiness looks completely out of reach until, once again, political events bring her a happy ending. The witty conversation Joan Smith excels at isn't much in evidence here, but we do have a sympathetic heroine and a hero who appreciates her.
