Ken Dimick was the advisor for my doctoral studies at Ball State University while he was working on Ladies in Waiting. He was a good friend and a creative, wise mentor. I recall one of his clients saying, 'Working with Ken was like putting my foot on the floor to stop the bed from spinning when I used to drink too much. He helped me stop the chaos.' Ken and a faculty partner contracted to provide counseling services to the residents of Indiana's main prison for women, and that experience was the ore from which this book was smelted. It's a compassionate collage of snapshots and incidents that provide penetrating insight into the human constellation of a correctional institution. There are vignettes here that have taken root in my heart and wing in my mind, and have borne wisdom and compassion over several decades. One line: 'They can keep my body here, but my mind's downtown.' Read the book for context and the exact quote; it's soul-food indeed.
