Book Overview

"The Revolt of the Angels" is a celebrated satirical novel that explores the boundaries of faith, rebellion, and human reason. The story centers on Arcade, a guardian angel who, after discovering the vast riches of human knowledge in a private library in Paris, becomes disillusioned with the celestial hierarchy. He chooses to renounce his divine duties and joins a clandestine group of fallen angels living on Earth, who are plotting a second insurrection to overthrow the deity they perceive as a tyrannical demiurge.

Through this imaginative narrative, Anatole France delivers a profound social and religious critique, blending elements of fantasy with biting wit. The work delves into complex themes of theology and political philosophy, questioning the nature of power and the cyclical tendencies of revolution. Set against the backdrop of early 20th-century French society, "The Revolt of the Angels" is both a whimsical tale of supernatural intrigue and a serious meditation on intellectual liberty. It remains a landmark of literary satire, praised for its elegant prose and its daring challenge to established dogma, securing its place as a classic of world literature.

Phenomenal work of art, poorly edited edition

This is one of the most poetic and beautiful works of fiction I’ve read in a very long time. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone. However, the brand new hardcover version by Wilder Press was a bit lazy with copy editing so there are lots of incomplete words and missing punctuation. Still an enjoyable and understandable read even with the mistakes, just a bit distracting and doesn’t do the work justice. It deserves better for how beautiful it is.
