Affluent housewife Karen Adams dies in mysterious circumstances and bequeaths to her best friend a testament detailing her relationship with her sexually sadistic and abusive husband and the ingenious method she employed to escape from it. In thus liberating herself however she has been forced to confront demonic forces inside her mind of whose existence she had previously been unaware. Karen's forthright account of her empowerment and revolt, her fall from grace and her search for redemption casts light on the effects of the sexual urge on the human psyche, on the ability to make moral distinctions, to choose between right and wrong and between good and evil. The novel contains depictions of sexual activity and erotic fantasy, predominantly of a sado-masochistic nature, and the reader should be aware of this. These scenes are not intended to titillate however or to stimulate feelings of sexual arousal. The novel is predominantly a psychological study and the aim is always to penetrate the dark roots of the sexual urge, not to display the physical attributes of the sex act itself.
