La monja gitana es una historia en la que se cruzan los destinos de tres mujeres: la gitana Fatheya, una monja expulsada llamada Aliaa y la joven Samar. Sus caminos se enlazan con los destinos complejos de tres hombres: el gitano Malek, el oficial Hussein y el hijo de un Pach . Sus vidas se tocar n en momentos claves que los marcar n durante toda su existencia. Los acontecimientos se producen en el bajo fondo de un barrio desfavorecido en las afueras del viejo Cairo copto, no musulm n, a finales de los a os 50. The Gypsy Nun is a story where the destinies of three women intersect: Fatheya, a Romani woman; Aliaa, an expelled nun; and the young Samar. Their paths intertwine with the complex fates of three men: Malek the Romani man, Officer Hussein, and the son of a Pasha. Their lives will touch at key moments that mark them forever. The events unfold in the underworld of a disadvantaged neighborhood on the outskirts of old Coptic Cairo--non-Muslim--at the end of the 1950s. Rizk introduces the reader to Egyptian national culture while bringing together different, uncommon worlds: that of the Romani, with their traditions and customs--how they live on the margins of society and the law under their own rules and rituals; that of convents through the innocent eyes of a religious sister who ends up breaking her vows; and finally the world of a palace from the monarchic era, seen in ruins after the 1952 Egyptian military revolution.
