David, The Neon Bible's protagonist, is a teenager who lives in a miserable town in the Deep South. A neon bible lights up the sky at night, and during the day religious fanaticism and spite ravage the residents' lives. David's father loses his job, and when he can no longer pay his contribution to the church a downward spiral begins that sees them turned into pariahs within their small community. There isn't much happiness in David's life apart for what his aunt Mae provides; after her ghostly career as a singer, and at seventy years of age, his mother's sister scandalizes the sanctimonious with her dyed blond hair, her brightly colored dresses and her decrepit boyfriends. After a disappointment in love and a bloody and chilling episode, the young David prepares himself for a new life on other horizons.
