L'Chaim is the Jewish toast meaning "To Life." This book is a version of my book "Other Peoples Bodies" with a few additions about dog and cats It includes an appendix about animal cloning. Like the previous book it is a collection of essays, research papers, monographs and one-offs, all directed to a common theme - the ethics of patents on genetic material. It treats both humans and other animals. It is written in a variety of styles and represents the work of a span of some thirty years. Like the biblical Jacob, the author has wrestled with this theme, but has come to a clear conclusion. L'Chaim is a Jewish perspective on the patenting of life. Every person's body has human genes passed down to each individual by her or his parents. Genes are the basic element of each person's individuality. Granting patents on human genes give companies, universities, foundations, and even parts of the U.S government a monopoly over your body. How did they do it?Congress must have passed some law. Wrong. The Supreme Court must have ruled on it. Not really. We will see why when we consider the cases of the oil eating bacteria and the Harvard Mouse.
