Là-Bas: (Down There)

By: Huysmans, J. K.

Disillusioned with modern life and repelled by the emptiness he sees around him, the writer Durtal turns his attention toward one of the darkest figures of medieval history: Gilles de Rais, the infamous nobleman accused of murder, sorcery, and monstrous crimes.

His research soon draws him beyond the safety of historical study. Through strange acquaintances and whispered rumours, Durtal becomes entangled with contemporary occult circles in Paris, where Satanism, black magic, forbidden ritual, and spiritual corruption seem disturbingly close at hand.

As the past and present begin to mirror one another, Durtal descends into a world of decadence, obsession, and religious horror, confronting both the fascination and the terror of evil.

Dark, provocative, and steeped in fin-de-si cle decadence, L -Bas is J. K. Huysmans's unsettling exploration of Satanism, occultism, corruption, and the human attraction to the forbidden.
