This is a very good account of the Japanese Army's operational and strategic decision-making before and during WWII. I recommend this book for anyone interested in the following areas. 1) WWII in the Pacific and the Far East, 2) Civil-military relations and civilian control of the military, 3) The affects of interservice rivalry. The book was written in 1951 by a former Japanese officer who served on the General Staff of the Imperial Japanese Army during the war. He outlines in a very concise and forthright manner the major decisions made by the Japanese Army, and the reasons they made them based on the information availible at the time. This book is a unique opportunity to look at what influenced the Japanese Army and how they reacted to the decisions and operations of the Allies. If you are reading this book looking for stories of blood and guts you will be disappointed. This is a scholarly dissertation about decisions of high command. It is at times dry reading but it is always interesting. It also has short biographies of many high ranking Japanese officers. I very much recommend it.
