This is the story of the author's grandfather, Frank Ellis, a country boy from North Hertfordshire who, along with thousands of other patriots, answered the call of Lord Kitchener and joined the army in 1914. Times were hard and the lure of the excitement of war, a secure job where food and accommodation was provided and the pride of wearing a uniform was hard to resist. Frank spent two years training and fighting for his country, first of all in Flanders and then at the Somme where he lost his life. Most of the time in the trenches he lived like an animal - nearly always wet and filthy, eating, sleeping and fighting in the mud and slime, sharing a hole in the ground with rats, slugs, frogs and beetles. The stench of death was always present as he lived alongside the decaying corpses of his fallen colleagues. Frank's body was never identified and his final resting place is Known Only Unto God.
