Can You Hear Me Now?

Hit the replay button on the tape deck for this amusing novel about an early-feminist in the radio business. KLIK is a must-read for young women who want an engaging example of how women tended to be regarded in the work place just a few decades ago. Schram brings such life to the characters one can't help but wonder how she fits in. Not only do you get a grasp of the behind-the-scenes at a San Francisco radio station, you get an entertaining read about how one young woman thrives by being true to herself.

A Good Story, Well Told

The story was well-written, and went deeper to show that when women in the workplace struggled to embrace the concept of business, they could excel; it wasn't that long ago, and we need to appreciate what they went through. I also admired the author's writing of good dialog, something that does not seem to be pervasive in the novels I read. The characters were well-developed, and the author made me care about them.

Recognition for modern-day pioneers

Mary Lou Peters Schram brings together a fascinating and diverse group of women at the San Francisco radio station KLIK. Sally, on her first job faces the uncertainties and self-doubt of youth. Rose, divorced mother of a young child, struggles with her fear of the unknown as she enters the job market for the first time. Evangeline, fiftyish, a re-entry woman after the failure of a 22-year marriage, has the burden of age against her. Each becomes a part of the turmoil at KLIK--turf wars, ratings worries, jealousies and secret loves. Tumultuous social changes take place and station KLIK represents the process. When I closed this book, I wanted more because I cared about these tough, brave women. They show the spirit of modern pioneering.
